Afterlife beliefs, especially those based on an nde (near death experience, have long been the subject of much discussion and debate. Beliefs in the buddhism afterlife and ancient egypt afterlife, based not only on the tenets of the egyptians, but those of the Greeks and Romans, have had profound impacts on our modern day positions. Christian opinion regarding death and the afterlife, including the question often raised by new and old believers alike, "is there an afterlife?" has been addressed over the years in the jewish writings and teachings of Judaism and even muslim thought.
Theists generally believe some sort of afterlife awaits people when they die. Atheists generally believe that there is not a life after death. However, some atheists, like Buddhists, tend to believe in afterlife as reincarnation sans a reference to God. Afterlife evidence of heaven and other beliefs in the afterlife are primarily religion based, but many others have recently begun to develop.
Agnostics generally hold the position that like the existence of God, the existence of supernatural phenomena, such as souls or life after death, is unverifiable and therefore unknowable. However, recent agnostic thought has begun to shift as more and more evidence in support of the existence of some form of conscious continuance survives our death. And though much of the evidence is empirically unverifiable, logic holds that it is certainly worth consideration and deeper investigation.
